The philosophy behind our Creative Arts Programme

A foundational belief of L’Arche is that central to every person is the need to feel useful, to have a sense of purpose, to feel part of and contribute to a larger group of people.

Our aim

Everyone needs an opportunity to work, to show what we can do, and we feel that we need to provide a place and create opportunities:

  • Which supports the community members mentally and physically.
  • Where people have the opportunity to discover their unique talents through different activities, such as dance, drama and painting.
  • For our community members to work.
  • Where we can welcome people are invited to spend time together, meet and socialise.

The programme

We provide interesting outings, do healthy exercise, provide life skills training and cater for their love of dance, drama, art, crafts and Kapa Haka.

All activities are decided in a collaborative approach with the core members then a theme is developed around the activity for maximum benefit i.e. a trip to view sculptures. We then talk about sculptures, get books from the library and then afterwards make sculptures.

We are constantly on the lookout for interesting outings and activities, so as to give our core members a varied range of experiences.

Some community members have part time jobs on the Kapiti Coast, both paid and unpaid.

As part of the ongoing programme we look at each participant and see what things would make their lives happier and more fulfilling, for instance a volunteer could take a community member on a social outing or shopping. From time to time we access to see if each community member’s needs and goals are being met.

Get Involved

I was immediately impressed with the warm welcome and accepting atmosphere of the community.
